about

'Does Anybody Here Remember Vera Similitude?' by Portland, OR-based band The Vardaman Ensemble is their first release of new recordings since 2020’s It Requires Only One Leg. Don’t
let the joke-y title fool you, the band—Zen, Eric, and HL—have weaved together guitar, bass, drums, synths, natural horn, and even an astroturf doormat to create music that is equal parts avant garde, krautrock, jazz, noise, spacerock, and horror soundtracks.

“Yo, Jimbo” is a wobbling and asymmetrical tribute to Eric Dolphy that ends with a full-on full-band blowout. “Siege of the Twilight Loon” is the first recorded cover by Vardaman. The original is by Parasites of the Western World (theparasites.bandcamp.com/album/the-parasites-of-the-western-world-album), a Portland group who released their self-titled album in 1978. Finally, “Outside Song” contains the first sung lyrics on a Vardaman song to date (borrowed from Flesh for Lulu’s “I Go Crazy” and Wings' “Jet”).

With this EPs Pink Floyd quoting title and its ambient-, jazz- and musique concrete- laced rock, The Vardaman Ensemble make a stop in a psychedelic space before heading to their next
home, wherever they may end up. --Martin Denny
